On my last birthday, my family took me out for an evening in Austin. They know my favorite places, so they treated me to all of them!
Once in Austin, we ate at one of my favorite Austin Mexican restaurants-Guero’s. Guero’s is located on South Congress and has been a true Austin hot spot for years. They have great food; I like the spinach and mushroom enchiladas with the fresco sauce, but there are several fillings and sauces to choose from. Oh, and the handmade corn tortillas-muy delicioso! You can eat inside, or they also offer sidewalk dining or dinner in the garden area. Guero’s has been located in the 100 year old Central Feed and Seed building since 1995, and the eclectic atmosphere is what you expect from a true Austin eatery.
Once we finished with dinner, we headed outdoors to the garden area and enjoyed a margarita and listened to the live music. Huge oak trees covered in white lights, as well as picnic tables scattered throughout, surround the music stage.
I didn’t want to miss out on my birthday cake, so we headed down to my favorite food trailer- Hey Cupcake! They sell out of cupcakes quickly, so off we went. The airstream trailer is just south of Guero’s, within walking distance. Oh, the cupcakes there are sooooo goooood- and BIG! You’ve got to try one.
We roamed back up the street enjoying the outdoors, our cupcake, and the night life along South Congress. We came upon Jo’s Coffee and of course couldn’t resist stopping for a cup o’joe. Coffee with my cupcake, hmmm; who could pass that up? The little coffee shack is located next to the ultra-hip San Jose Hotel-so if you’re in need of a room for your Austin trip…look no further!
One thing to note: Had it not been winter, we would have arrived at dusk, walked to the bridge to see the bats emerge, and back up to Guero’s for dinner (about 1.7 miles round trip).
All these little hot spots are within walking distance along South Congress and are part of what makes Austin unique. There’s so much about Austin to love, and I’m just happy it’s part of the great Texas Hill Country!
Thanks for an Austin-tatious birthday!
~Karin~
